Legacy Application Systems and Databases

We have already discussed the e-commerce software system you will use. The following types of legacy application systems are typical targets for legacy connectivity:
  1. CICS: Customer Information Control System (CICS) is a family of mixed language application servers that provide online transaction management and connectivity for applications on IBM mainframe systems under z/OS and z/VSE.
  2. Encina: Distributed transaction processing with Encina
  3. Tuxedo: Tuxedo (Transactions for Unix, Extended for Distributed Operations) is a middleware platform used to manage distributed transaction processing in distributed computing environments. Tuxedo is a transaction processing system or transaction-oriented middleware, or enterprise application server for a variety of systems and programming languages.
  4. TN 3270: Plus is one of the widely used Telnet terminal emulators
  5. MQSeries: MQSeries is an IBM software family whose components are used to tie together other software applications so that they can work together. This type of application is often known as business integration software or middleware.
  6. IMS: IBM Information Management System (IMS) is a joint hierarchical database and information management system with extensive transaction processing capabilities.
  7. EDI: Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is the electronic interchange of business information using a standardized format; a process which allows one company to send information to another company electronically rather than with paper. Business entities conducting business electronically are called trading partners.
  8. SAP R/3: SAP R/3 is the former name of the enterprise resource planning software produced by the German corporation SAP AG (now SAP SE). It is an enterprise-wide information system designed to coordinate all the resources, information, and activities needed to complete business processes such as order fulfillment, billing, human resource management, and production planning.

Legacy databases

Legacy database examples include:
  1. IMS Database: An IMS database is a large, centralized collection of information comprising one or more physical files that can be accessed by the SAS/ACCESS interface to IMS. An IMS database is a hierarchical database. Information is structured in records that are subdivided into a hierarchy of related segments
  2. Oracle 18c: Oracle Database 18c, is the latest generation of the world's most popular database, and may be deployed on-premises and/or in Oracle Cloud running on general purpose hardware or engineered systems specifically designed for database workloads such as Oracle Exadata and Oracle Database Appliance.
  3. dBase: dBase (also stylized dBASE) was one of the first database management systems for microcomputers, and the most successful in its day. The dBase system includes the core database engine, a query system, a forms engine, and a programming language that ties all of these components together.
  4. CP/CMS: (Control Program/Cambridge Monitor System) is a discontinued time-sharing operating system of the late 60s and early 70s, known for its excellent performance and advanced features.
  5. VSAM: VSAM stands for Virtual Storage Access Method. VSAM is a file storage access method used in MVS, ZOS and OS/390 operating systems.
